Letter, 21 Dec. 1854, discussing mechanical problems with machinery used in gold-mining operations, difficulties when digging in sandy soils, frequent work stoppages and one week break in operations to replace equipment parts costing "one thousand dollars," comments on the quality and quantity of production, valuation of gold, recent discovery of cooper veins about located "10 yards below," and assertion that "our gold is the best in the United States except one mine."
